Tri-Campus Leadership Team
April 13, 2005
Greater Hartford Campus

Present: Edna McBreen, William Pizzuto, Michael Menard, Krista Rodin, Ken Fuchsman, Robin Simmons, Nadine Brennan, Tessie Naranjo, Sheila Harris, Tony Hopkins, Lin Rising, Angela Brightly , Victor Schiavi and Eileen Lemay

  1. Meeting notes from March 30, 2005

    Unanimously approved.
  2. Edna McBreen welcomed

Krista Rodin, Dean of the College of Continuing Studies, and Ken Fuchsman, Executive Program Director for Continuing Studies BGS to the meeting. Krista reported that the Board of Trustees approved a Masters in Professional Studies in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. This is being done in partnership with the Naval Post Graduate School who has the only centrally approved Homeland Security program. UConn is taking the lead in the business end of Homeland Security. They are hoping to get people interested in participating in this field throughout the university.
Krista explained that students would work on simulations throughout their curriculum, which will cover everything from biological terrorism to chemical warfare to natural disasters. This will focus on the kind of business plans being made within the business community in case of such disasters. They have seven faculty members that will begin training in May in Monterey , CA .

This is the fourth Masters degree program that CCS offers. The others are:

    1. Humanitary Services Administration
    2. HRM Masters in conjunction with the School of Business
    3. Occupational Safety which is an offshoot of Environmental Health & Safety
Many of these courses are being offered on-line, as CCS goes for the national, international and global base. Some curriculum will not be on-line. Also focus with majority of courses on site, so there is a mix. Also, 80% of BGS programs for CCS is at the regional campuses.

On the Bachelors Degree level CCS offers a Human Services focus, Occupational Health, and Criminal Justice – which tracks into Homeland Security and focuses on Safety & Security Management.

Each program has a programmatic advisory board that consists of faculty within UConn, faculty outside of UConn, representatives from the National Association and potential employers.

There is also an on-going discussion with Family Studies because they'll require HDFS courses as well and these are often closed, so they are looking at hiring some faculty to develop some HDFS courses on-line and on-site. These will be open to regional campus students as well.

Bill Pizzuto stated that we should have some people from Homeland Security/State Police on the board as well. Krista said they are working with the federal government in Washington as well as the State. Bill said we can get the police and fire chiefs involved, also.

A BGS in Public Safety is also offered that is broader than criminal justice. But there is also a one-year certificate (Exec Ed) program that may also be an option. Can use those six credits toward the BGS in Public Safety as well.

Also looking at an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Curriculum not in yet on ABA (autism).

Edna asked what BGS's approach to the Gen Ed requirements is. Ken said that one “W” has been approved so far. They will be offered on-line as well. ...if student could get a “W” in their focus. Gen Eds will apply to BGS students same as everyone else except for second language. Krista said that we don't offer enough language classes at the Regionals. They have worked closely with Veronica's office to push “W” classes are available in the summer.

Edna said “W” courses – do we have enough on our campuses to include BGS students? Angela Brightly said the “W” courses are a major challenge. Nadine Brennan said a lot of W's are close to full already and now the cap is 19. Angela said it is essential that we have representation on the board.

Language courses offered are minimal. Generally language classes at not offered in the evening, so these students could possibly be exempt on an individual basis.

Decisions will be made by senate on Gen Ed requirements.

Krista said they also want to keep the web updated on all of this to keep the traffic in the Registrars' offices down. Krista also pointed out that Weekend College and on-line courses are more prominent as we start having more and more space problems.

Edna said that regarding the “W” classes, Torrington and Waterbury are encouraged to have Scott Campbell speak to the advisers about language for the “W” classes. He is already doing it with Nadine at the W. Hartford Campus. Both Stuart Brown and Judy Delorenzio should talk to Scott about meeting to discuss this as well.

The AVP's have asked the Freshman Writing Coordinators to put together something. They will meet with faculty who are teaching “W” courses. We need to take advantage of these writing coordinators. Edna will ask Bonnie to invite Scott Campbell to one of the meetings in the summer to discuss this.

  3. Budget and Status Report

Tessie Naranjo distributed budget reports for each campus, AVP, School of Business , Urban & Community Studies Programs and Recruiter Accounts. She stressed that there are six more weeks until the end of the fiscal year. May 31 we close books. For emergencies contact Tessie Naranjo.

  4. Projects

    1. Wall construction project in Waterbury is ready for implementation.
    2. When Tessie gets information on the Torrington data wiring project, she will forward it to Victor & Sheila so everyone will have the same information and updates.
    3. MPS Project – West Hartford – Dept. of Public Policy, 4 th floor, 17 new doors.
    4. Psychology Project – West Hartford – Air handler under discussion.
    5. Hartford parking lot repair project – George Kraus overseeing project.
  5. Search Status

Edna distributed an updated Search status report in Bonnie's absence.

  6. Additional Items
    1. Decisions on IT position: Asking for an IT person to replace Steve Fletcher and also for one additional person for West Hartford . Edna was asked by the Provost to prioritize searches. She put Waterbury 's IT evening person as the #1 request. Sheila Harris mentioned that the student they are using in Hartford is graduating in May. Edna said that we need to realize that students will be graduating, so that needs to play a major part in planning for long term.
    2. Another item discussed was that in the summer months should put in a request to CCS to pay for IT Help. David Williams should negotiate with Krista on that with copies to Edna and Veronica.
    3. The Library has extensive training for their student workers. Refresher training at start of each semester is given as well, and they are looking to take some students and have them specialize in certain functions. Edna said there should be an on-going discussion of work study/student labor strategies for Tri-Campus. Need to put a system in place. Can possibly look at the library's system and tweak it to fit the individual campuses. Need to look into the entire student labor/work study issue.
